Strengthening positive impact through partnerships
We are all in need of more sustainable solutions to power our lives and our world. Strong partnerships allow us to work together to integrate innovative energy solutions, develop positive social impact programs, and create long-term value within the communities.

Focus areas
Working together with our partners, we custom-tailor social impact programs that respond to the needs of the communities, maximize resources, and deliver long-lasting benefits. Our social impact programs are aligned with our purpose of accelerating the future of energy, together, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and four focus areas that improve the quality of life in the communities.
Social justice and energy equity
- AES donated $30,000 to the Energy Efficiency Appliance partnership with Hawaiian Electric and Makaha Learning Center. With the program launch in Waianae, more than 80 families received a $200 household grant to help offset the cost, courtesy of AES.
Education and workforce development
National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project
- NEED Educational Outreach Pilot Program Teacher Workshop Training for 30 public high school teachers on state-specific renewable energy curriculum.
Hawaiʻi Community Foundation (HCF) STEM Scholarships
- AES Hawaii Scholarship Fund - $110,000.
- $30,000 for the 2022-2023 academic year (deployed).
- $80,000 for the 2023-2024 academic year ($20k each for Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi).
The scholarship provides financial assistance for Hawaii residents who demonstrate financial need, are in good academic standing, and are pursuing a degree that could lead to a career in renewable energy. Preference is given to students who reside in the communities hosting AES renewable energy projects.
Mālama ‘Āina: Environmental stewardship and native species conservation
Mālama Hulē'ia and Trust for Public Lands
- $10,000 matching gift to the Trust for Public Lands and Mālama Hulē'ia for the restoration of the Alakoko Fishpond.
Waikōloa Dry Forest Initiative
- $15,000 Waikōloa Dry Forest Initiative Acre Adoption.
- Adoption of one acre of the Waikōloa Dry Forest Preserve for replanting of native species.
Community resilience and disaster relief
Hawaiʻi Red Cross
- In 2021, AES saw the impacts of flooding and landslides on the North Shore of O‘ahu, Maui, and Kaua‘i communities and wanted to do our part to help those affected to recover and rebuild. AES donated $30,000 to support the Red Cross' disaster relief efforts across Hawai‘i, and the donation kicked off a local matching gift campaign to benefit the Red Cross.
United Way
- $10,000 in support of Hawaiʻi United Way’s relief efforts across O‘ahu, Maui County, Kaua‘i, and Hawaiʻi Island.
- To assist Hawaiian families in need during the COVID-19 pandemic, AES recognized the need to establish a special fund for relief efforts. AES donated $10,000 to the United Way and partnered together to identify high-impact areas of community response, including support for local and small businesses and schools.
